    The AGN-starburst connection, Galactic superwinds, and M_BH - sigma

    Recent observations of young galaxies at redshifts z ~ 3 have revealed simultaneous AGN and starburst activity, as well as galaxy-wide superwinds. I show that there is probably a close connection between these phenomena by extending an earlier treatment of the M_BH - sigma relation (King, 2003). As the black hole grows, an outflow drives a shell into the surrounding gas. This stalls after a dynamical time at a size determined by the hole's current mass and thereafter grows on the Salpeter timescale. The gas trapped inside this bubble cools and forms stars and is recycled as accretion and outflow. The consequent high metallicity agrees with that commonly observed in AGN accretion. Once the hole reaches a critical mass this region attains a size such that the gas can no longer cool efficiently. The resulting energy-driven flow expels the remaining gas as a superwind, fixing both the M_BH - sigma relation and the total stellar bulge mass at values in good agreement with observation.     The MIDdleware Assurance Substrate: Enabling Strong Real-Time Guarantees in Open Systems With OpenFlow

    Middleware designed for use in Distributed Real-Time and Embedded (DRE) systems enable cost and development time reductions by providing simple communications abstractions and hiding operating system-level networking API details from developers. While current middleware technologies can hide many low-level details, designers must provide a static configuration for the system’s underlying network in order to achieve required performance characteristics. This has not been a problem for many types of DRE systems where the configuration of the system is relatively fixed from the factory (e.g., aircraft or naval vessels). However for truly open systems (i.e., systems where end users can add or subtract components at runtime) the standard static network configuration approach cannot guarantee that required performance will be met because network resource demands are not fully known a priori. Open systems with stringent performance requirements need middleware that can dynamically manage the underlying network configuration automatically in response to changing demands. Fortunately, recent trends in networking have resulted in a wide variety of networking equipment that expose a standardized low-level interface to their configuration via the OpenFlow protocol. In this paper we discuss how OpenFlow can be leveraged by DRE middleware to automatically provide performance guarantees. In order to make the discussion concrete, we describe the architecture of our prototype middleware MIDAS as well as the details of one example network resource management strategy. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach via performance assesment of a simple DRE application using our MIDAS and commerically available OpenFlow hardware

    Electron correlation in Li+, He, H− and the critical nuclear charge system ZC: energies, densities and Coulomb holes

    This paper presents high accuracy correlation energies, intracule densities and Coulomb hole(s) for the lithium cation, helium, hydride ion and the system with the critical nuclear charge, Z_C, for binding two electrons. The fully-correlated (FC) wavefunction and the Hartree-Fock (HF) wavefunction are both determined using a Laguerre-based wavefunction. It is found that for the lithium cation and the helium atom a secondary Coulomb hole is present, in agreement with a previous literature finding, confirming a counter-intuitive conclusion that electron correlation can act to bring distant electrons closer together. However, no evidence for a tertiary Coulomb hole is found. For the hydride anion and the system just prior to electron detachment only a single Coulomb hole is present and electron correlation decreases the probability of finding the electrons closer together at all radial distances. The emergence of a secondary Coulomb hole is investigated and found to occur between Z =1.15 and 1.20. The FC and HF energies and intracule densities (in atomic units) used to calculate the correlation energy and Coulomb hole respectively, are accurate to at least the nano-scale for helium and the cation and at least the micro-scale for the anions

    Heat shock factor 1 regulates lifespan as distinct from disease onset in prion disease

    Prion diseases are fatal, transmissible, neurodegenerative diseases caused by the misfolding of the prion protein (PrP). At present, the molecular pathways underlying prion-mediated neurotoxicity are largely unknown. We hypothesized that the transcriptional regulator of the stress response, heat shock factor 1 (HSF1), would play an important role in prion disease. Uninoculated HSF1 knockout (KO) mice used in our study do not show signs of neurodegeneration as assessed by survival, motor performance, or histopathology. When inoculated with Rocky Mountain Laboratory (RML) prions HSF1 KO mice had a dramatically shortened lifespan, succumbing to disease ≈20% faster than controls. Surprisingly, both the onset of home-cage behavioral symptoms and pathological alterations occurred at a similar time in HSF1 KO and control mice. The accumulation of proteinase K (PK)-resistant PrP also occurred with similar kinetics and prion infectivity accrued at an equal or slower rate. Thus, HSF1 provides an important protective function that is specifically manifest after the onset of behavioral symptoms of prion disease
